When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

While we always try to save natural teeth, extraction is sometimes the best option for your overall oral health. Common reasons include:

Wisdom Teeth Problems

Impacted, partially erupted, or crowded wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth. Early removal prevents complications.

Severe Tooth Decay

When decay has destroyed too much of the tooth structure for a filling, crown, or root canal to be effective, extraction may be necessary.

Advanced Gum Disease

Periodontal disease can destroy the bone supporting teeth, causing them to become loose. Extraction may be needed to protect remaining teeth.

Crowded Teeth

Orthodontic treatment sometimes requires removing teeth to create space for proper alignment of remaining teeth.

Broken or Fractured Teeth

Teeth broken below the gumline or with vertical fractures extending into the root may not be restorable.

Failed Root Canal

If a previously treated tooth becomes reinfected and retreatment isn't possible, extraction prevents the spread of infection.

Socket Preservation: Protecting Your Future Options

After a tooth is extracted, the jawbone in that area begins to shrink. Socket preservation (also called ridge preservation) involves placing bone graft material into the extraction site immediately after removal.

Maintains jawbone volume and density

Preserves your options for dental implants

Prevents neighboring teeth from shifting

Protects facial structure and appearance

Makes future implant placement easier and more predictable

Heals naturally over 3-4 months
