Oral Health Changes as We Age

Your oral health needs evolve throughout life. As we age, we face new challenges: medications that cause dry mouth, gum recession that exposes sensitive roots, increased risk for oral cancer, and dental work from decades past that may need attention.

Many seniors also manage chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or osteoporosis that have direct implications for dental care. We take all of these factors into account when creating your treatment plan.

Good oral health isn't just about teeth—research increasingly shows connections between oral health and overall health, including heart disease, diabetes management, and cognitive function. Taking care of your mouth is part of taking care of your whole body.

Common Senior Dental Concerns:

Dry mouth from medications
Gum disease and gum recession
Root decay on exposed surfaces
Worn, cracked, or broken teeth
Denture fit issues
Oral cancer risk
Sensitivity to hot and cold
Existing dental work needing replacement

Dental Services for Seniors

Comprehensive care tailored to the needs of older adults.

Preventive Care

Regular cleanings, exams, and oral cancer screenings are essential. We catch problems early when they're easier and less expensive to treat.

Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontal disease becomes more common with age. We offer deep cleanings, medication, and ongoing maintenance to protect your gums and bone.

Dry Mouth Management

Many medications reduce saliva production, increasing decay risk. We provide strategies and products to keep your mouth moist and healthy.

Denture Services

Whether you need new dentures, adjustments to existing ones, or want to explore implant-supported options, we can help.

Crown & Bridge Repair

Old dental work doesn't last forever. We repair or replace crowns, bridges, and fillings that have worn out over time.

Medication Review

We review your medications to understand how they affect your oral health and coordinate with your physicians as needed.

Medications That Affect Oral Health

Over 500 medications list dry mouth as a side effect. Many seniors take multiple medications, compounding the problem. Common culprits include:

Blood pressure meds
Antidepressants
Antihistamines
Pain medications
Diuretics
Parkinson's drugs
Anti-anxiety meds
Decongestants

We'll discuss your medications and provide recommendations to protect your teeth despite these side effects.

Why Dry Mouth Matters

Saliva does more than keep your mouth comfortable—it's your body's natural defense against tooth decay. Saliva washes away food particles, neutralizes acids, and contains minerals that strengthen enamel.

When medication reduces saliva production, decay can progress much faster than it would otherwise. We've seen patients who went decades without cavities suddenly develop multiple areas of decay after starting new medications.

That's why we take dry mouth seriously. We'll recommend products and strategies to keep your mouth moist, and we may suggest more frequent checkups to catch any problems early.

The Mouth-Body Connection

Research increasingly shows that oral health affects overall health—and vice versa.

Heart Disease

Gum disease is linked to increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Treating periodontal disease may help protect your heart.

Diabetes

Diabetes increases gum disease risk, and gum disease can make blood sugar harder to control. Managing both is essential.

Pneumonia

Bacteria from the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs, causing respiratory infections. Good oral hygiene helps prevent this.

Dementia

Emerging research suggests connections between gum disease and cognitive decline. Oral health may support brain health.

Questions About Senior Dental Care

Is dental care safe if I have heart problems or take blood thinners?

Yes, with proper precautions. We'll review your medical history and medications carefully. For most dental procedures, you can continue blood thinners. We coordinate with your cardiologist when needed for more complex procedures.

I have arthritis and struggle to brush properly. What can I do?

Electric toothbrushes with larger handles are easier to grip and do most of the work for you. We can also recommend adaptive devices. The most important thing is that you're trying—we'll help you find solutions that work.

My dentures don't fit well anymore. Is that normal?

Yes—your mouth changes over time, even after tooth loss. Bone naturally shrinks, causing dentures to loosen. We can reline your dentures for better fit, or discuss implant-supported options for more stability.

Does Medicare cover dental care?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) generally doesn't cover routine dental care. However, many Medicare Advantage plans include dental coverage. We also work with traditional dental insurance and offer payment plans.

I haven't been to a dentist in years. Will you judge me?

Absolutely not. Many of our patients come to us after years away from dental care. We're just glad you're here now. Our only goal is to help you achieve better oral health, wherever you're starting from.
